BETTER FAQs

You’ve Got Questions. We’ve Got Answers.

Moving can feel like a big deal—because it is. That’s why we’ve compiled your most common questions about planning, pricing, packing, and more into one easy-to-browse place. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, here's everything you need to know to move with confidence.

What makes a moving company trustworthy?

Look for these key signs:

  • A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

  • Verified Google and Yelp reviews from real customers

  • Industry awards like Angi’s Super Service Award

  • Proper licensing: MCC 316547, US DOT 679167, TxDOT No. 005972633C

  • Fully bonded, licensed, and insured

When should I book my move?

  • Local or intrastate moves: Book 7–10 days ahead

  • Long-distance moves: Ideally 15–30 days in advance

  • Need a full-pack service? Schedule a consultation ASAP so we can prepare your custom plan.

What's the difference between a mover and a broker?

  • Movers handle everything from packing to delivery.

  • Brokers just coordinate the move and subcontract to other carriers.
    At
A Better Tripp, we’re the actual movers—hands-on from start to finish.

Are there rules for interstate moving companies?

Yes. Movers must comply with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations. That includes clear documentation, upfront pricing, and customer protections for any move crossing state lines.

Do you have a minimum for long-distance moves?

Nope! Whether you’re shipping a single item or an entire house, we’ve got you covered—no minimum weight required.

Do you offer staging services?

We don’t stage homes, but we’re happy to move furniture and décor to help you prepare your space for sale.

Will you assemble/disassemble my furniture?

Yes! We handle most furniture disassembly and reassembly. Specialty items (like complex gym equipment) may require a third-party expert.

What size trucks do you use?

  • Local moves: 26-ft air-ride box trucks

  • Long-distance moves: 28-ft trucks and full 18-wheelers for large moves

What’s a trip charge?

It’s a flat fee that covers the trip from our warehouse to your home—and back again after your move.

What items get crated?

High-value or fragile items like art, antiques, pianos, pool tables, and chandeliers can be custom-crated for safe transport.

What should I do before moving day?

  • Finish packing

  • Label boxes

  • Reserve parking/elevator access

  • Pack essentials (coffee maker, meds, sheets, change of clothes)

  • Secure child/pet care for the day

Do you offer storage?

Yes! We offer Storage in Transit (SIT)—temporary storage for your belongings until you're ready to receive them.

What’s the Order for Service?

This is a pre-move document outlining:

  • Estimated cost

  • Extra services (like packing or storage)

  • Pickup and delivery dates
Think of it as a roadmap for your move—not a binding contract.

What’s the difference between a binding and non-binding estimate?

  • Binding: Locked-in price.

  • Non-binding: Estimate based on weight and services—final cost may vary.

How are local and long-distance moves priced?

  • Local: Based on hourly rate + number of movers/trucks

  • Long-distance: Based on weight and distance

What’s an air-ride truck?

A vehicle with special air suspension to reduce bumps and protect your furniture during transport—especially helpful for long-distance or fragile-item moves.

What are my responsibilities as a customer?

  • Be present (or send a representative) at pickup/delivery

  • Read all documents

  • Communicate updates

  • Make timely payments

  • File any claims promptly if needed

What happens at pickup?

  • Be on-site to direct and answer questions

  • Review the Bill of Lading and inventory

  • Check that all items and existing damage are properly noted

  • Strip beds and defrost appliances

  • Provide updated contact info

When is payment due?

  • Local moves: Payment after delivery

  • Long-distance moves: Payment before unloading
If you’re doing multiple shipments, you’ll pay for all at once.

How do I help my kids adjust to moving?

  • Let them pack a "favorites" box

  • Explore their new city online

  • Have a family pizza night before the move

  • Keep routines familiar and involve them in the process

How do I declutter before a move?

  • Donate to groups like Boys & Girls Country, a nonprofit organization changing the lives of children whose families are in a Christian, loving environment.

  • Sell online or host a garage sale.

  • Toss expired meds, outdated paperwork, or unused items.

Where do I find references?

Should I get everything in writing?

Yes—always. Confirm:

  • Estimate and services

  • Payment schedule and methods

  • Bill of Lading (contract)

  • Liability and claims process

What documents should I keep?

  • Birth certificates, Social Security cards, tax records

  • Medical and insurance info

  • Legal paperwork, wills, IDs

  • Prescriptions, emergency contacts, banking info

What tax form do I need for moving expenses?

IRS Form 3903. You may be able to deduct moving costs if your move is 50+ miles away and related to a new job.

Do you move vehicles?

Yes—we can move cars, motorcycles, and other small vehicles.

What are registered movers?

Movers registered with the FMCSA (USDOT number required) who follow all federal regulations and have verified insurance.

Pre-Move Checklist:

  • Send rugs and curtains for cleaning

  • Schedule utility disconnection/reconnection

  • Make travel plans

  • Reserve elevators

  • Pack essentials and vehicle

Is an in-home estimate necessary?

What can't movers transport?
